Dental bridges are precision devices created to fill the gap which is created by missing teeth. They are made from one ‘floating’ false tooth which sits in the gap, and then dental crowns either side to anchor the bridge in place. The false tooth that sits in the gap can be made from porcelain, gold, or a combination of different materials.
Dental bridges have to be supported by something, whether that is the natural teeth either side, or by dental implants. By using dental bridges to replace your missing teeth, you can restore your smile and protect the rest of your teeth too.
The only thing Dental Bridges can’t do alone is to replace the entirety of the missing tooth. They can replace everything above the gum effectively which is great for the way your smile looks and feels. However, they don’t replace the tooth root which means your jawbone will degrade and this can affect the way you look. With implant retained dental bridges, there is no need to change the natural surrounding teeth. Traditional bridges work using two crowns either side of the missing tooth gap, and then a false tooth in between to replace the missing tooth. This type of bridge is the most common and is very effective at restoring the smile.
Resin bonded bridges can be made from porcelain or porcelain and metal and are supported by a framework, also made from porcelain or metal. The framework usually sits on one side of the bridge and is fitted to your natural tooth to secure the bridge in place.
An implant retained bridge looks like a normal bridge only it is secured from underneath with a dental implant which replaces the missing tooth root.
Appointment 1 – dental bridge treatment can be completed in as little as two full appointments. Following a consultation we would take a detailed impression of your missing tooth gap. Our professional laboratory will then match the shade of your bridge to the surrounding teeth.
We will also prepare the teeth either side of the gap to hold the supporting crowns which keep the bridge in place. This involves taking away some of the enamel so that a dental crown can be anchored securely in place. Next we place a temporary bridge until you attend for your fitting appointment.
Appointment 2 – at your next appointment we will fit your bridge and check it looks and feels as natural as possible. We will also likely arrange a future appointment to fully adjust the bridge following a couple of weeks of use where you can check it feels and looks exactly how you want it to.
