Dental Hygiene Service Essex

Good oral hygiene works for you by keeping your mouth free from plaque and tartar. Regular visits to the hygienist help identify problems as early as possible and also prevents potential complications. What’s more, a clean mouth has fresher breath, which benefits you at work as well as when out with friends.

  • Proper oral hygiene includes brushing and flossing regularly, as well as regular professional cleaning by the hygienist.

Now Perfect Smile Spa offers cleaning-only appointments, so you can take care of routine maintenance without necessarily having to visit the dentist first. Since 1st May 2013 The General Dental Council brought in a new policy that allows you to visit a hygienist or dental therapist without requiring a dental prescription from a dentist.

What is a Dental Hygienist?

A Dental Hygienist is specially trained in the prevention and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease, which is the main cause of adult tooth loss and to give advice on all aspects of oral health. In this appointment, the hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums and give you oral hygiene instructions to help you maintain your oral hygiene at home.

What Happens in a Dental Hygienist Appointment?

In your dental hygienist appointment, your dental hygienist will check your medical history and will immediately identify if you have any dental problems. They will discuss your oral health with you and whether or not treatment is necessary. Oral hygiene advice will then be given, for example, which tooth brushing technique is best for you.

In addition to this, your dental hygienist will check the addition of your gums and will check for plaque or bleeding, before removing any hard deposits (calculus) and stain by scaling the teeth, followed by polishing the teeth.

  • Medical history check
  • Identify dental problems or areas of concern
  • Discuss whether treatment is necessary
  • Oral hygiene advice
  • Check the condition of gums and if bleeding is present
  • Check for plaque
  • Deep clean and polishing of the teeth

What is gum disease?

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.

All gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque is a film of bacteria which forms on the surface of the teeth and gums every day. Many of the bacteria in plaque are completely harmless, but there are some that have been shown to be the main cause of gum disease. To prevent and treat gum disease, you need to make sure you remove all the plaque from your teeth every day – this is done by brushing and flossing.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the swollen gums bleed when they are brushed during cleaning.

What is periodontal disease?

Long-standing gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease gets worse the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out. In fact, more teeth are lost through periodontal disease than through tooth decay.
