Are you afraid to have Dental Implants?

Here are some of the alternatives to dental implants

What is an implant?
A dental implant is an artificial root that is surgically placed into your jaw
to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place

What is an implant made of?
Many implants are made of titanium ,a metal that is bio-compatible and offers strength and durability as well as a unique property of fusing directly to bone.

Can anybody have an implant?
Unfortunately not everyone is suitable for dental implants. Particularly heavy smokers and people that suffer with severe gum disease. This is because people that smoke or have gum dieses have more chance of the implant failing due to insufficient bone in the jaw to hold the implants in place. Both smoking and gum dieses causes the bone to be damaged and lost.

Do implants hurt?

The general procedure for placing implants is carried out under local anesthetic (the same as when having a filling or extraction) Some people may choose to also be sedated during treatment. Discomfort is expected after the procedure for the next few days after the treatment is carried out.

What are the benefits of having an implant?

  • Strong and stable
  • Doesn’t effect speech
  • Doesn’t effect eating or drinking
  • Easy to clean
  • Protects your healthy teeth (teeth either side are not compromised as opposed to having a bridge)
  • Long term

What are the cons of having an implant?

– More dental appointments
-longer procedures
– more expensive than other treatment alternatives
– not everybody is suitable to have dental implants

So, what are the alternatives to the dental implants?
Dental bridges

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is a fixed replacement of a tooth/or teeth which is placed/cemented on to the tooth/teeth next door to the gap that is being replaced. Bridges are usually made of porcelain and precious metal

There are three different types of bridges

Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic (replacement tooth) in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics

Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.

Maryland bonded bridges (also called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.

How long do bridges last?

Bridges usually typically last around 10-15 years sometimes longer, depending on the health on the teeth/tooth holding the bridge in place

What are the benefits of a bridge?

-only 2 dental appointments required
-able to eat normally and comfortably
– Fixed/permanent
– Long Lasting
– Doesn’t effect speech

What are the cons of have a bridge?

  • The healthy teeth are not compromised
  • Risk of decay under restoration if teeth not cleaned efficiently
  • Difficult to clean properly
  • More hygienist visits required to maintain oral hygiene
  • Food trapping
  • Preparation of abutment teeth required
