Many patients experience slight discolouration surrounding the braces, which is only noticeable after the braces are removed. This discolouration is generally nothing to worry about and usually occurs if you experience difficulty manoeuvring your toothbrush around the braces, alongside natural discolouration over time.

Oral hygiene is vital in preventing plaque and tartar, which are the two main causes of tooth discolouration. Orthodontic patients should always take extra care in their oral hygiene routine, including flossing (at least) twice a day, to ensure their teeth after braces are as healthy as possible.

It’s important to remember that braces themselves do not directly cause discolouration of the teeth. Instead, it’s the plaque and tartar, difficulty brushing, and certain foods/drinks we consume that stain teeth after braces, while the surface where braces have sat will remain the same colour, prior to orthodontics.

Whilst some causes of stained teeth are beyond your control, others causes are usually down to our day-to-day lifestyle, diet, hygiene or even medication.

Your teeth will yellow with age, so if you have orthodontic braces for a long duration, you may notice a slight difference in shades between the area where the bracket has been fitted and the area surrounding the bracket your braces are removed. At-Home Teeth Whitening

At no additional cost, we offer free at-home teeth whitening to all orthodontic patients, carried out in the comfort of your own home. 

We’ll have impressions taken of your mouth after your braces are removed, and then we’ll send out a teeth whitening pack to your home address with custom-made teeth whitening trays. When you receive your custom trays, you’ll need to wear them for up to an hour a day, for two weeks.

Alternatively, you can choose to have ZOOM! teeth whitening which is performed in our Essex clinic at an extra cost if you prefer us to carry out the whitening instead. The in-house ZOOM! treatment requires a visit to our clinic, giving you a brighter, whiter smile in as little as 60 minutes.
